If you go to any roadside tea stall, grocery shop or vegetable stall in India, you will hear it. There’s a little speaker that speaks every payment that comes in, so the shopkeeper never has to check a phone. These devices have made UPI something people try to do into something merchants depend on. Now payment companies are scrambling to deploy them more broadly and find out what else those merchants might want.

Shares of Pine Labs Ltd. closed at Rs. 179.31, down 4.77 percent from previous close of Rs. 188.30. The stock opened at Rs. 187.05, reaching an intraday high of Rs. 187.30 and low of Rs. 177.65. The company currently has a market capitalization of Rs. 20,687 crores.

What’s the News?

Pine Labs announced on September 24, 2026 that it plans to deploy 10 lakh Soundboxes across India. The company described it as an investment in digital payments infrastructure, and it did not disclose a specific monetary value for the rollout. The devices are cloud-based and give merchants an audio confirmation when a payment is received. They can be managed remotely, receive over-the-air software updates and be monitored centrally, so the company doesn’t have to handle each unit separately.

The goal is to strengthen digital payments infrastructure and deepen UPI penetration in new markets and business segments, as more transactions move beyond everyday small purchases. CEO B Amrish Rau said the company wants to put money back into the ecosystem now that new ways of earning from it are emerging. He also said the company believes sustainable economics and financial inclusion can support each other.

Financial & Business Analysis

Looking at the quarterly results of Pine Labs Ltd., the company’s consolidated revenue increased by 17.27 percent YoY, from Rs. 653.08 crore in Q1 FY26 to Rs. 765.87 crore in Q1 FY27, and increased by 3.29 percent QoQ from Rs. 741.44 crore in Q4 FY26.

In Q1 FY27 Pine Labs Ltd.’s consolidated net profit increased by 308.56 percent YoY, reaching Rs. 19.57 crore compared to Rs. 4.79 crore during the same period last year. As compared to Q4 FY26, the net profit has decreased by 67.04 percent, from Rs. 59.36 crore.

The basic earnings per share stood at Rs. 0.17 as against Rs. 0.05 recorded in the same quarter in the previous year, FY2026.

Pine Labs earns most of its revenue from what it calls its digital infrastructure and transaction platform, which covers card machines, smart billing, affordability offers and online payments. Its issuing and acquiring business is smaller but growing faster. International markets add a modest slice. A large part of income now comes from subscription fees from its digital checkout points, so the business is built on recurring fees from devices already sitting in shops.

Pine Labs does not run an order book the way a contractor would. What it has instead is a large installed base of merchants, with over two million digital checkout points and a merchant base of 1.15 million. The Soundbox rollout widens that base at the small-merchant end, where the company has been less visible. If even a portion of those merchants later move up to its billing, credit or software services, this could turn out to be a smart entry point. The risk is competition, since Paytm and PhonePe are aggressively defending their positions, so the pace and cost of the rollout will matter.

Industry Context

UPI has become the backbone of Indian payments. It processed 22.35 billion transactions in April 2026 alone, and now accounts for more than 70% of offline POS transactions at Pine Labs. As more everyday spending happens on the rail, merchants need a fast, reliable way to confirm each payment, which is exactly what a soundbox does.

The runway for these devices looks long. Industry estimates suggest soundbox deployment could reach 5.4 crore devices by FY29. Screen-based digital checkout points are projected to grow at a 17% CAGR between FY26 and FY29 to reach 1.9 crore devices. Growth is happening at both ends of the merchant market, with basic voice devices for small shops and fuller checkout systems for larger merchants.
