The Indian IT sector is navigating a structural transition in FY27, caught between cautious discretionary spending and a massive pipeline of AI-driven modernization. Amid this, eight IT stocks have fallen sharply from their highs amid weak global technology spending, cautious client budgets, and shifting demand patterns. The Indian IT services industry is entering FY27 in a state of complex divergence. On one hand, global macroeconomic uncertainty, delayed decision-making, and client cost optimization continue to weigh heavily on near-term discretionary spending. On the other hand, a massive structural shift is underway as global enterprises transition from artificial intelligence experimentation to scaled, outcome-led deployments.

While the sector has faced subdued revenue growth and project deferrals over the past year, resulting in significant valuation discounts across the Nifty IT index, the underlying demand for digital transformation remains intact. Major players like TCS, Infosys, and HCLTech are sitting on robust, multi-billion-dollar order books driven by vendor consolidation, core modernisation, and cloud migration. Furthermore, with cloud penetration currently at roughly 25% and expected to double in the coming years, the long-term structural tailwinds are clear.

For investors, the narrative is no longer just about waiting for a cyclical macroeconomic rebound in the US and Europe. The real test in FY27 is execution. The companies that will lead the next growth cycle are those successfully pivoting their business models from legacy capacity-selling to delivering measurable, AI-integrated managed services while maintaining strict margin discipline.

Weak Global IT Spending

The performance of Indian IT stocks remains closely linked to technology spending by global enterprises, particularly in the US and Europe. Cautious spending, delayed discretionary projects and slower decision-making can affect revenue growth and deal conversion. Nasscom expects technology spending to remain relatively range-bound in FY27, while AI spending gradually increases.

AI Is Creating Both Opportunity and Disruption

Artificial intelligence is changing the traditional IT services model. Companies are increasingly investing in AI-led transformation, automation, cloud and data services, creating new revenue opportunities. At the same time, AI-driven productivity could reduce the amount of traditional labour required for some technology services, putting pressure on conventional outsourcing models and pricing.

Deal Wins Will Be a Key Trigger

Large deal wins and stronger order pipelines could become important drivers for a recovery in IT stocks. TCS reported a Q1 FY27 total contract value of US$9.5 billion, including a US$800 million AI-led transformation deal, while Infosys reported US$3.6 billion in large deal wins, with 61% being net new.

ER&D Demand Could Support Mid-Cap IT Stocks

Companies such as KPIT Technologies, Tata Elxsi and Cyient have significant exposure to engineering and research services, particularly automotive, transportation and digital engineering. KPIT reported US$257 million of new engagements in Q1 FY27, while Cyient said its large-deal pipeline reached its highest level in 12 quarters.

Company-Specific Recovery Triggers

The recovery drivers are not identical across these stocks. KPIT and Tata Elxsi are exposed to automotive and software-defined vehicle spending, while Cyient has exposure to transportation and engineering. Large IT firms such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro are more diversified across geographies and industries.

Sonata Software and Mphasis have greater exposure to digital transformation, cloud, AI and enterprise technology services. Tata Elxsi, for example, reported 14.5% YoY revenue growth in Q1 FY27, while KPIT’s management highlighted improving AI-led productivity and stronger growth expected in the second half of FY27.

Can These Stocks Stage a Recovery?

A sustained recovery would depend on several factors, including stronger discretionary technology spending, healthy deal conversion, improving revenue growth and stable margins. For engineering-focused companies, recovery in automotive and ER&D spending will also be important. For larger IT companies, AI-led deal wins, cloud adoption and enterprise transformation could remain key growth drivers.
