Mumbai: An eight-year-old boy died after he was allegedly hit by an Innova Crysta while crossing the road in Bandra West on Sunday. The Bandra police registered a case and subsequently arrested the woman who was driving the vehicle. An eyewitness claimed that the woman was talking on the phone when the accident occurred. However, the police said the eyewitness’s allegations would be independently verified during the investigation.
The deceased has been identified as Ansh Gupta, while the accused driver has been identified as Megha Rawal, 45.
According to the police, the accident occurred between 2.15 pm and 2.30 pm on St John Baptist Road, which leads towards Mount Mary Church, in front of Jijamata Garden in Bandra West. Ansh, who lived in the Kadeshwar area of Bandra West, had gone out to play. The accident occurred while he was returning home after playing in the garden and was attempting to cross the road.
An eyewitness told an agency, “In the afternoon, I was sitting on a chair in front of the shop. While sitting there, I saw a car approaching. It was an Innova, a 4×4 vehicle, and a woman was driving it. The child was playing near the road. As he was crossing the road, the woman’s car was approaching. The car was travelling at a very high speed, and she was talking on the phone.”
The police said the eyewitness’s allegations would be independently verified during the investigation. Experts from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) will be called in to examine the SUV and help determine the exact cause of the crash.
According to another eyewitness, the woman stopped the vehicle a short distance ahead after bystanders shouted at her. An auto-rickshaw driver lifted the injured boy, placed him in the vehicle and rushed him to Holy Hospital in Bandra West. However, doctors declared him dead at around 3.45 pm.
The police informed Ansh’s parents about the incident. His body will be sent for a post-mortem examination.
After being alerted by bystanders, a police team immediately reached the spot and conducted a panchnama. Rawal was taken into custody and subsequently arrested.
The Bandra police registered a case against Rawal under Sections 105 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Section 184 (driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Further investigation is underway.
